This is Madonna’s first world tour since Confessions in 2006, which itself smashed box office records for a female artist, grossing nearly US$200m. Sticky and Sweet has already taken more during the first leg of the tour already holding top spot for tours by a solo artist.
The Sticky and Sweet Tour debuted in 2008 at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Wales before making an extensive circuit of Europe and the U.S. for three and a half months. Now, Sticky and Sweet is back in Europe and Madonna dons the Givenchy leotard and leather boots once more. The queen of pop, who could pass for much younger than her 50 years, again puts on a dazzling show, cavorting around the stage in a variety of outfits from bondage gear to 1980’s dance inspired boxing shorts.
Madonna and Friends, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Pharrel Williams and Kanye West
As usual, the staging of the concert is spectacular with Madonna using the giant screens to introduce friends and collaborators to the performance. In, ‘Punchy Nature’, Britney Spears appears, stuck in a lift. When the last line of the song is delivered, ‘I’m not your bitch’, the on-screen star replies, ‘It’s Britney Bitch’ to roars of appreciation from the audience. Other stars making virtual cameos were Justin Timberlake, Pharrel Wiliams and Kanye West, who reprised their performances on the Hard Candy album which the tour promotes.
Madonna Designers, Givenchy and Stella McCartney
The show has four distinct themes, Pimp, Old School, Gypsy and Rave, giving the set designers, (and Madonna’s clothes designers, who include Givenchy and Stella McCartney), plenty of scope to push the boundaries. Pride of place must be given to the vintage Rolls Royce car with the Madonna number plates and the giant M’s on either side of the stage, encrusted with diamante reputed to have cost over $1m.
Madonna, Sticky and Sweet, Still Going Strong at 50.
The ground breaking staging would have counted for nothing if the show didn’t live up to expectations, but this was never going to be an issue as the Material Girl drove the show forward in the way that only she can.
Whereas many performers of her age would be looking for short cuts, Madonna proved she can still cut it, with displays of pole dancing and double Dutch skipping which would have many women half her age gasping for breath as she blasts her way through new songs and gives old favourites a new twist.
